The National Day of Prayer: This annual event encourages collective prayer across the nation. Established by a joint resolution of the United States Congress in 1952 and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman, it invites every citizen to pray for our country. We are mobilizing the Christian community to pray for our leaders and families. This observance honors our nation’s founding on prayerful reverence towards the God of the Bible.

LIFT UP THE WORD - LIGHT UP THE WORLD

For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him. 2 Samuel 22:29-31

Historical Insight: "Fasting and prayer are religious exercises; the enjoining them an act of discipline. Every religious society has a right to determine for itself the time for these exercises, and the objects proper for them, according to their own particular tenets; and right can never be safer than in their hands, where the Constitution has deposited it." —Thomas Jefferson, 1808

A Storied Tradition: The tradition of national prayer dates back to 1775 when the Continental Congress called for prayer during the formation of our nation. This legacy includes the 1863 day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” proclaimed by President Lincoln and is sustained through annual presidential proclamations each first Thursday in May, a practice reaffirmed by every state governor and territories last year.

Why It Matters: The National Day of Prayer is a profound reminder of our founders' dependence on divine guidance. Like major holidays, it's a vital part of our national heritage and a powerful opportunity for all Americans to unite in prayer for our country.

The National Day of Prayer is a cherished freedom and a call to unity. It is a day for all Americans, beyond all divisions, to come together in faith and prayer. As Shirley Dobson, NDP chairman emeritus, said, "We have lost many of our freedoms in America because we have been asleep. I feel if we do not become involved and support the annual National Day of Prayer, we could end up forfeiting this freedom, too."
